Our Prediction:

Cheetahs will win

Cheetahs – Western Province Match Prediction | 22-08-2019

Western Province will be very rusty as they start out against a smooth running Cheetahs side, and they will also be away from home, which will have an effect. The Cheetahs have the momentum going forward, but it is not wise to write off Province as they will be right up there. It may take a while, but Province should win a tight one.

The men from the Free State are also the defending champions so they have a lot of pride in this competition, and will not want to let things slip when the going gets tough. They not only beat the Sharks, they put fifty points one and did it through some fantastic running rugby. The Cheetahs looked very impressive against a Sharks side that was full of debutants and new faces. Having the game at home will also give them confidence as Western Province will already be a little rusty and unsure of themselves. The coach of Province will have a lot at his disposal, but it remains to be seen how many youngster Province are looking to blood in this tournament.

The Cheetahs had stumbaled in their previous 2 outings, losing 27-20 away to the Sharks in Durban and 24-22 at home to the Golden Lions. Last week's try fest in Nelspruit was a welcome return to free scoring rugby for the Cheetahs as In earlier rounds they thrashed the Griquas 68-14 in Bloem and they also beat the Bulls 43-27 at Loftus.

Cheetahs vs Western Province: Preview, Prediction, Tips

That bonus point could still be significant in the bid to make the play offs. If WP lose this game but pick up bonus point(s) they will be sweating on the outcome of the Bulls v Sharks game to follow whilst a defeat with no bonus points will end their season right here. In theory WP could finish as high as second although that would take a wide margin win here.

The Cheetahs will be looking to build on to a strong start to their campaign having beaten the Sharks 47-12 in Bloemfontein last week. There has been plenty of money for them this week with the Handicap opening at +6.5 and is sitting at +3.5 at the time of writing. They are able to field virtually a full strength Super Rugby side and while Western Province are able to welcome back many of their players who were involved in the loss to the Chiefs last week they have also decided to rest all players that are carrying minor injuries and have had a heavy workload during the season.

Western Province had a bye last week and would have been grateful for that as they were involved in a Super Rugby quarter final which they lost. Western Province will always be a favourite for the Currie Cup a they have recently won the SuperSport Rugby challenge, and they managed to do that with their reserve team without losing a game. They can now put all their energy into the Currie Cup and play a lot of their stars against a Cheetahs side that is also backing their best in this provincial competition. It is an impressive feat and one that sets them up for the Currie Cup as their fringe players will have that winning feeling.

Bulls vs Cheetahs Key Statistics

It will be another tough away game for the Lions but they dealt with the trip to Western Province so well last week and following two hard-fought wins, they will feel they have the character to see off anybody, although the Cheetahs will have other ideas. Their attacking shape has been brilliant in their two games so far and they should be able to come out on top again. This should be an enthralling contest between two classy teams and both will think they are good enough to claim the win here.
